Description
The gilded triggerfish is a brownish-gray, spotted triggerfish with a slightly bluish tint and a compressed body typical for Balistidae.
Males are easily recognized by blue throat patches and yellow-edged fins, while females lack the blue markings and have thin brown fin margins.
Both sexes have dark lips, a small white spot near the nostrils, and pale white spots covering most of the body.
Occurs across the Indo-Pacific, from eastern Africa to Hawaii, and from the Ryukyu Islands south to New Caledonia. Found around islands, outer reefs, and sometimes open water, usually at 20–50 m, but recorded from 8–161 m.
