Forest Lake (the reservoir in Thousand Hills State Park near Kirksville, Missouri) is an artificial lake created by damming a tributary of the Chariton River — Big Creek. Water enters the lake from Big Creek and then exits via the same stream just below the dam, continuing downstream as Big Creek. From there, Big Creek flows into the larger Chariton River system, eventually contributing to the Missouri River watershed.
