The reservoir commonly called Yates Center City Lake (also listed as Yates Center Reservoir in official sources) is a man‑made city lake about 2 miles west and 3 miles south of Yates Center, Kansas. It covers roughly 205 acres and is managed for fishing and recreation. Like most small municipal reservoirs, the water leaves the lake through the dam’s spillway and outlet structures and enters the local drainage network. The dam impounds a tributary of Big Sandy Creek (specifically a Big Sandy Creek tributary), meaning water released from Yates Center City Lake flows down that tributary into Big Sandy Creek. Big Sandy Creek then continues generally eastward and is part of the Verdigris River basin in southeastern Kansas.
