Description

The White River is a Missouri River tributary that flows 580 miles (930 km)[3] through the U.S. states of Nebraska and South Dakota. The river originates in northwestern Nebraska, on the slopes of Pine Ridge north of Harrison, at an elevation of 4,861 feet (1,482 meters). It flows southeast, then northeast past Fort Robinson and north of Crawford. Sometimes it has no surface flow due to the dry climate surrounding its desert and prairie basin, although thunderstorms can cause short-term intense flow. Near Chamberlain, the river flows year-round. Since 2001, the White River has generally had high-quality water.
